During a hearing on multiple requests, the Homicide and Femicide Prosecutor's Office for the Panama West region requested the filing of charges for femicide, minor abuse, and rape against the stepfather of the infant. In August 2022, the Homicides and Femicidio Section of the Panama West Regional Prosecutor's Office secured a 30-year prison sentence for the stepfather and mother of an 11-month-old infant. The stepfather and mother of the two-year-old girl who died from her injuries were remanded to correctional centers after a guarantees judge applied the precautionary measure of provisional detention. However, during the investigation and based on medical information, it was determined that the two-year-old child showed signs of abuse, as well as rape. At that time, the 24-year-old man told on-duty doctors that the girl had fallen. The victim's mother was charged with the crime of minor abuse. Investigations into this femicide case began on December 3 after a two-year-old girl died at the Nicolás A. Solano hospital in La Chorrera, where she had been taken by her stepfather. The couple was convicted of crimes against life and personal integrity in the aggravated homicide modality, and for the crime of family violence in the modality of child abuse. This incident occurred in the La Veraneras sector, of the Arraiján district, in the province of Panama West.
